Fifth group of first aid trainees in Väike-Õismäe graduated

On the 24th day of May, a group of community members gathered in Tallinn Õismäe Gymnasium to learn first aid as a part of the community civil defence project.  There was one goal for everyone: to learn first aid in a way that sticks!
Our valued partner, paramedic and first aid trainer Andrus Lehtmets, often says during his courses that people many people have attended a first aid course before, sometime in their lives but many unfortunately remember very little of it. The problem is, when someone can’t recall what they’ve learned, then in a real first aid situation, they might freeze or become confused — unsure of what to actually do. In such cases, a person might end up doing nothing at all — not even calling the emergency number 112 to report what is wrong.

The goal of the training organized by the Crisis Research Centre and conducted by paramedic Lehtmets is precisely to prevent such situations. When someone learns something, it must be truly useful. That’s why our first aid courses focus on leaving participants with a few simple core principles of first aid. And the most important one is this: notice what is happening around you!

Walk through the world with your eyes open — and if you notice that something is wrong with a fellow citizen, at the very least, report it to the emergency services. And if you have the willingness, courage, and the situation isn’t dangerous — go help. You don’t have to step in directly if you don’t feel safe or up to it, but you must call 112. This and much more is what the participants of our first aid training learned.

Our sincere thanks go to paramedic Andrus Lehtmets, who demonstrated just how simple first aid can be — whether in everyday life or in times of crisis. And there’s truly nothing to fear when you have knowledge and confidence! This first aid training was part of the crisis skills training program, funded by the National Foundation for Civil Society and the Ministry of the Interior.

Keep your eyes and ears open — we may be offering this training in your community soon. And if you can’t wait — send an email at info@kruk.ee and we’ll send you an offer!
